In the cool climate of northeastern France, winemakers in the Champagne region produce a tasty, bubbly wine we also know as Champagne.

Some of the terms used to describe the sweetness of French Champagne (or other sparkling wines) can be confusing. The most commonly terms are Brut, Extra Dry, and Demi-Sec. Champagne labeled Brut is actually the driest classification and many include even drier examples such as Extra Brut or Brut Nature. Extra Dry despite what many people think, is actually a tad sweeter than Brut. Demi-Sec, rather uncommon in the Champagne region, is a semi-sweet style of French wine.

Champagne can be made with varying percentages of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier grapes, and the production method is called Méthode Champenoise. After the primary fermentation of the grape juice is finished the result is bottled and yeast and some type of sugar are added to create a secondary fermentation in the bottle. It is during the secondary fermentation that these magical bubbles in Champagne occur.

Notable French Champagne houses such as Krug, Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin, Bollinger, Louis Roederer, Tattinger, and Moet & Chandon, that produces the iconic Dom Perignon champagne, have been refining their craft for over 200 years in some cases.

  1. Pierre Péters Cuvée de Réserve Blanc de Blancs

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#53286

    WS9696 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/21
Based on the 2018 vintage, this wine includes reserves dating back to 1988. Most of the components come from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger; all grow on chalk. The wine seems to layer that chalk’s seabed heritage into beautiful richness, as it combines different parcels aged in stainless steel, oak barrels or concrete. “It reminds me of architecture,” Tina Vaughn of NYC’s The Simone said. “The smell of a building site—granite, concrete, steel beams. Very Ayn Rand.” Or is it the architecture of ancient fossilized soil, along with a softer impression, one that made me smile at the glory of Champagne.
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2020
Sleek and mouthwatering, with a fine, satiny mousse and a fresh panoply of crunchy pear, grapefruit sorbet, pickled ginger and spring blossom notes. Bright and finely knit, with rich hints of toast and mineral echoing on the finish. Disgorged November 2019. Drink now through 2025.
    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2020
The NV Blanc de Blancs Cuvée de Réserve is such a gorgeous wine. Bright, mineral and savory, with attractive tropical accents, the Cuvée de Réserve offers striking nuance and tons of class. This release is based on 2016, with reserve wines that go back to 1988. Partially blocked malolactic fermentation helps preserve a measure of freshness, but what impresses most is the wine’s total sense of balance. For readers who want to know what the Côte des Blancs is all about, without spending the money for an elite cuvée, this is the place to start. In a word: impressive. Dosage is 6.5–7 grams per liter. Disgorged: March, 2020.
    WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2020
This is a beautifully balanced selection that’s crisp and laced with taut apple and citrus flavors. It has a rich texture, intense fruit and a tight minerality, which gives it structure and the potential for bottle aging.

    2012 / 750 ml. | Item#53194

    WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/21
This is a powerful Rosé, built with the addition of 13 percent red wine (pinot noir from Bouzy) and 11 percent of the blend aged in oak foudres. It starts off youthfully intense, with a smoky black-tea edge to the tannins. The wine is structured and savory, freighted with limestone earthiness until it grows bright and racy with air. This is built to last.
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2020
A crowd-pleaser for its fine balance and integration, offering a mouthwatering mix of wild strawberry and peach fruit, biscuit and salted almond flavors. Hints of anise, pink grapefruit zest and honey show on the creamy finish. Disgorged January 2019. Drink now through 2027.
    WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2020
An attractive pale rosé color heralds a crisp, dry style of Champagne, ripe and now mature. Along with the structure and minerality that give the wine its shape and further potential, there is a hint of the toastiness to come. Drink the wine now, or even better, wait until 2021.

  3. Champagne Aubry Brut

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#20209

    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2017
The NV Brut is a gorgeous entry-level offering. The flavors are brisk and finely cut in this chiseled, crystalline Champagne from the Aubry brothers. Pear, green apple, lemon oil and white flowers add to an overall impression of brightness and tension. Aubry’s straight NV Brut is once again one of the very finest wines in its peer group. I rarely miss a chance to drink it. The current release is a blend of 50% 2014 and 50% reserve wines, with a bit more Meunier in the blend than is the norm. Disgorged: June 2017. Dosage is 6 grams per liter.
    SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2017
A firm, clean-cut Champagne, with a satinlike mousse that carries finely meshed notes of apple blossom, anise, poached pear and fleur de sel. A hint of almond shows on the finish. Disgorged January 2016. Drink now through 2019. 1,200 cases imported.
    ST8888 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2005
Very pale copper. Smoky, nutty and deep on the nose, with scents of ripe apple, toffee and tarragon. Deep, earthy and rich (this features 60% meunier and 20% pinot noir) but lively on the palate, the apple and sweet toffee notes repeating. Long, full and nicely hefty on the finish.
    WS8888 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2007
Scents of hazelnuts and almonds carry the toasty savor of this wine, knit into a broad richness that feels sweet in the middle, dry in the end. It’s soft and simple. For nut-crusted salmon.

    VN8989 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2019
This release of the Selection des Belles Années, based on 2013, is brisk and expressive, with an alluring combination of energy and richness. In the glass, the Belles Années is a touch compact, but a bit of bottle age should help. Wonderfully persistent and inviting, the Belles Années has so much to offer. SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2011
Fresh and lively, with a leesy hint of bread dough mixing with candied berry, quince paste, lemon zest, wax and fleur de sel. Fine-grained, with a lip-smacking, juicy finish. Disgorged April 2011. Drink now through 2018.
    ST9090 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2005
Medium straw color, with an intensely bubbly mousse. Aromas of lemon, lime, and pink grapefruit. Taut and minerally on the palate, with vibrant, concentrated citrus flavors complicated by white pepper and earthier lemongrass notes. This gained flesh and weight with air. Tangy and nervy on the crisp finish, which is fresh and precise.
    WS9090 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2005
A distinctive and vinous style of Champagne, this tastes like a Chablis with its intense stoniness and gingery fruit. Broad, creamy vanilla and brioche flavors place it with food, whether roast fish or roast chicken.

A firm, fresh Comtes with a tight and composed palate. It’s full-bodied with a racy mid-palate. Long and persistent. Very structured with phenolics and acidity. Minerally. Floral, too. Refreshing and energetic. September 2021 release. Drink or hold.
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2022
A minerally version, with smoke and saline notes deftly meshed with flavors of glazed apple, lemon-infused pastry cream and marzipan. This is fine and softly creamy in texture, with lemony acidity providing good definition through to the lightly toasty finish. Elegant. Drink now through 2030. 2,800 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

    2004 / 750 ml. | Item#34672

    ST9292 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2012
Light yellow. Candied citrus fruits, white flowers and chalky minerals on the fragrant nose. Juicy, penetrating and pure, offering lively orange and lemon zest flavors with suggestions of honeysuckle and ginger. Shows a strong mineral quality on the penetrating finish, which features a hint of toasted almond. The bottling that I reviewed last year had no disgorgement date on the back label but this one does.
    SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2011
An open-knit texture is focused by firm acidity while rich notes of leesy bread dough and smoky roast nut add depth to flavors of kumquat, tangy apple, white peach and lemon peel, with an aromatic finish. Disgorged January 2010. Drink now through 2019. 1,500 cases made.

  9. Champagne Henriot Rosé Brut

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#50693

    WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2009
The discrete Henriot labeling is echoed in this elegant wine. Like so many Henriot Champagnes it has good bottle age, shows toast as well as light red fruits. There is a depth of flavor here, the texture of yeasty mousse and apple skins going right through the taste. Ready to drink, but worth aging.
    WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2014
A powerful, vinous rosé, this presents rooty scents of beets and rhubarb that add a savory nuance to its ripe stone-fruit flavors. It finishes with lean intensity and a tight, floral restraint. Pour it with roast game birds.
    SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2019
Apple blossom and graphite notes are an aromatic entry for this mouthwatering rosé Champagne, which features a creamy mousse and a well-knit range of white peach, licorice, sun-dried cherry and chalk flavors. Drink now through 2021. 1,200 cases imported.
    ST9191 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2008
Light pink with a fine bead. Zesty redcurrant and strawberry aromas are given depth by pungent herbs and a subtle smokiness. Firm and focused on the palate, offering spicy red berry and cherry skin flavors and good mineral snap. The precise, nervy leaves sweet red fruit and dusty minerals behind. Very fresh, and strikingly elegant.

  10. Chartogne-Taillet Brut Cuvée Sainte-Anne

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#20210

    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2018
The NV Brut Sainte Anne is a gorgeous wine, as it so often is. Pliant and inviting, with superb textural richness, the Sainte Anne shows Alexandre Chartogne’s style off to great effect. Dried pear, chamomile, mint mad dried flowers are some of the many notes that run through this super-expressive Champagne. This release is a 50/50 blend of 2015 and reserve wines, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, also in equal measure. Disgorged: December 2017.
    SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2016
Buoyant acidity and a lively bead carry pretty notes of ripe Honeycrisp apple, lemon zest, pickled ginger and slivered almond in this balanced Champagne, in an aperitif style. Disgorged February 2016. Drink now through 2019. 1,200 cases imported.
    ST8989 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2005
Light gold color. Fresh aromas of orange blossom, acacia and honeysuckle, with a suggestion of grilled nuts. Round and supple, with deep, almost sweet flavors of mango, apricot and yellow plum. Frothy and suave, with ripe orchard fruit flavors and notes of pear and apple. The delicate, almost weightless finish is subtle, fine and long.
    WS8989 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2008
Between the sweetness of the fruit and the steely acidity there’s density in the middle of this wine. It tastes chalky and real. For bulots and other fruits de mer.

Flavors of poached pear, candied lemon zest and biscuit, with a rich hint of roasted almond, ride the lively bead of this crisp, minerally Champagne. Drink now through 2018. 15,000 cases imported.
    WE8989 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2007
This must be one of the most familiar nonvintage Champagnes, so it’s good to be able to report that it is much improved. The dosage has been lowered, and there is considerable freshness, crispness with apple and toast. It is full-bodied but well balanced.
    ST8888 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2006
Light gold. Buttered apple and pear aromas, with hints of anise and brioche. Medium in weight, with a silky texture and sweet orchard fruit flavors framed by gentle acidity. Broad and rich on the finish, with a lingering note of sweet butter.

  12. Krug Rosé 26éme Édition

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#58513

    WS9696 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2013
The best bottle of Krug Rosé we’ve tasted in some time, this is a glorious pinot noir, cloud-like in its raspberry and forest floor scents. It follows a chalk line of flavor, seamless and linear while the wine rolls and tumbles in precisely choreographed length. Delicate pink heaven in a glass.
    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2019
The NV Rosé 22ème Edition captures all the best of the Krug house style. Wonderfully fresh and vibrant, with a classic hint of reduction, the 22ème is simply pristine. The Krug Rosé has typically been a Champagne of freshness and tension. That is very much the case here. Readers should expect a crystalline, taut Rosé full of citrus, white flowers chalk and red berry fruit, all supported by veins of salivating minerality and acidity. This is such a compelling and alluring Rosé. This release is based on 2010, with reserve wines back to 2005, a relatively compact range of vintages. I loved it.
    SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2018
Aromatic, with orchard blossom, ginger and kumquat hints, this vibrant rosé shows a beautiful marriage of intense acidity and flavor range, allowing notes of peach skin, blood orange granita, toasted coconut and Marcona almond to play and expand on the palate as they ride the lovely, lacy mousse. Offers a lasting, racy finish. Disgorged Spring 2016. Drink now through 2025.
    ST9595 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2000
Pale copper-orange. Extraordinary, Chambolle-like nose hints at wild strawberry, coconut, lanolin, nut skin and Christmas spices. Very fine mousse. Extremely rich but very dry, with complex but subtle flavors of strawberry, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon and smoke. Bright, harmonious acidity. Very dry but clinging and penetrating on the aftertaste. Consistent with Krug’s other releases, this utterly singular Champagne is more wine than rosé.
    WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2010
The beauty of Krug’s rosé is the sense of bottle age, of that extra richness. That means the wine is not just the sum of its delicious red berry fruits. It’s also the way the wine is rounded out, filled with secondary flavors, toast and almonds and a taut minerality. The aftertaste is taut, dry, seamless, complex.

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#23164

    SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2012
A smoky, fresh rosé, lightly chalky in texture, showing delicate flavors of crème de cassis, gumdrop, grilled plum and ground spice. Minerally finish. Drink now through 2018.
    WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/15/2003
At first blush, the bouquet is rich and impenetrable, but when it opens citrus comes on strong. Chewy apple fruit with some Pinot heft define the palate, while licorice and anise add character to the finish. Plump, round and a pleasure to drink. Very substantive.
    WS9090 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2009
A light, copper-colored rosé, this basks in light, sweet red fruit and flowers. It’s soft, but keeps its sweetness in check, ending with cedary finesse. For seafood sausage.
