"Wish they all could be California...wines!" Yes, it's a familiar refrain, one we've all sung to ourselves countless times. California wines are among the most famous and recognizable in the world, and for good reason: boasting a wide variety of climates and growing areas, California produces wines that rival any in the world for quality and price.

The best California wines arguably come from Napa Valley and Sonoma County in Northern California, but don't forget about the Central Coast, or even an up-and-coming region like Temecula in Southern California.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the staple red grape of California, matched by Chardonnay as the most popular white grape in the state. Whatever your preference, it's clear that every growing region in California excels in producing both red and white wines of unmatched excellence.

  1. Patrimony Cabernet Sauvignon

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#58635

    JD97+97–99 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 9/30/2021
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon continues to show brilliantly. (I rated it 97–100 from barrel last year.) It has a quintessential Cabernet nose of pure crème de cassis, crushed stone, lead pencil, graphite, and tobacco that gains depth and richness with time in the glass. Deep, full-bodied, rich, and incredibly textured, yet still fresh, light on its feet, and beautifully balanced, this gorgeous Cabernet shows what’s possible with the variety from Paso Robles. The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Patrimony lifts from the glass with a classic bouquet of black currant, lifting hints of rosemary, graphite and dusty sage. It’s silky, nearly creamy in feel, with depths of ripe dark red fruit and sweet spice that swirl throughout. A web of fine-grained tannins engulfs the palate. While powerful and structured, the impact is well-measured, leaving the senses clenched in youthful poise as pretty inner florals slowly fade. What a beauty, and with such an amazingly bright future. (Eric Guido)
    RP95+95–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Mar 2022
The 2019 Patrimony is fresh and minerally at this stage. Still in barrel, it’s made entirely of free-run Cabernet Sauvignon and will be aged for 30 months in 100% new French oak. Deep ruby-purple, it’s scented of blueberry liqueur, thyme, mint chocolate and dried herbs with savory wafts of soy sauce. The full-bodied palate is grainy and fresh, with a long, spicy finish. It has the detail and balance to allow it to pick up complexity as it continues along its evolution toward bottling. (Erin Brooks)

  2. Daou Soul of a Lion

    Cabernet Sauvignon
    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#55982

    RP97+97+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 8th Sep 2021
The 2018 Soul Of A Lion is an incredible Cabernet Sauvignon, made exclusively from free-run juice, blended with 15% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot and aged 22 months in 100% new French oak. Opaque ruby-purple in color, the nose opens slowly, segueing from graphite and tobacco leaves, to violets and blue fruit preserves, to cinnamon, potpourri and dark spices. The palate is seamless and cashmere-like, with expansive, pure, mineral-laced fruits enlivened by a burst of freshness that highlights the perfectly ripe fruit character this vintage. The finish is very long, offering violet perfume and iron tones that linger in the mouth. This is a gorgeous wine that combines unique personality with expert craftsmanship. It drinks well now but has all it needs for a long life in the cellar.

A creamy black-cherry aroma is balanced by toasted herbs and roasted coffee bean on the nose of this impressive bottling. There’s a firm structure to the dense palate, and the flavors are expertly cohesive, combining herbs and savory meat with blueberry and blackberry.
    JD95+95+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 9/30/2021
Based largely on Cabernet Sauvignon blended with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2018 Soul Of A Lion offers a brilliant array of cassis, tobacco leaf, graphite, lead pencil, and earth. With full-bodied richness on the palate, it offers ripe tannins, a round, layered, yet still focused texture, and a great finish. Tight, compact, and focused, it’s going to benefit from 3–4 years of bottle age and drink brilliantly over the following 15–20 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Dark purple. Intensely perfumed dark berry liqueur, exotic spice, incense, floral and licorice aromas show outstanding clarity and pick up hints of espresso and vanilla with air. Deeply concentrated, mineral-tinged cassis, blueberry, violet pastille and bitter chocolate flavors become livelier and take on a smoky nuance as the wine stretches out. Broad and youthfully chewy in texture, showing firm tension, impressive floral-dominated persistence and dusty tannins that lend solid closing grip. All new French oak.

Aromas of blackberries and lavender follow through to a full body with tight, firm tannins that are long and linear. Lots of pretty fruit as well. Some pine-needle and forest-floor undertones. A cooler and more refined Daou. Drinkable now, but better in 2023.

    RP97+97+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Mar 2022
The 2019 Soul Of A Lion is a blend of free-run Cabernet Sauvignon (77%), Cabernet Franc (14%), and Petit Verdot (9%), aged 22 months in 100% new French oak. Opaque ruby in color, it offers aromatic contrast between dark, savory cherry fruit, chargrill and graphite, and top notes of green pepper and rose petals. The palate explodes with detailed flavors and its tannins are already resolved and chocolaty, with seamless acidity and exotic spicy layers emerging on the extended finish. Wow! (Erin Brooks)

Inky magenta. Primary, mineral-accented cassis, cherry pit, licorice, roasted coffee and incense aromas reveal oak spice and pipe tobacco flourishes. Shows superb clarity and spicy thrust on the palate, offering sweet black and blue fruit, exotic spice, vanilla and candied rose flavors that deftly blend weight and energy. Youthfully gripping tannins frame a wonderfully long, smoky finish that leaves cherry liqueur and vanilla notes behind. 100% new French oak.
    WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2022
Toasted espresso bean, charred walnut shell and seared meat aromas ride atop a dark cassis tone, all contributing to the portrait of a brooding wine. That classic toasty, woody element spreads through the palate, as dark cocoa dust sprinkled across rich berry sauce flavors get a light pop of mint on the finish. (Matt Kettmann)

A full-bodied cabernet sauvignon with firmness and length. Very polished tannins. Chewy and solid. Very curated and thoughtful quality to the tannins. Sandalwood and blackberry on the finish, which remains elegant, despite the strength. Try after 2025 and onwards.
    JD94+94–96+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 9/30/2021
Always a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot that’s brought up in new barrels, the 2019 Soul Of A Lion sports a dense purple hue as well as a beautiful nose of pure crème de cassis, currants, chocolate, crushed stone, and tobacco. It’s rich and full-bodied, with a voluptuous texture, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#60157

    JD97+97–99 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 9/1/2020
Along the same lines, the 2019 Patrimony Cabernet Franc (100% Cabernet Franc aging in new French oak) is slightly more California in style with a Napa-like sexiness and opulence. Stunning blackberries, dried flowers, incense, dried tobacco, and cedary notes all soar from the glass, and it’s a powerful, super-rich barrel sample that still stays balanced and even elegant. It ranks with some of the finest examples of this variety in California. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    VN9696 pts. - Vinous - May 2023
The 2019 Cabernet Franc Patrimony is impossible to resist, with a beguiling and hauntingly dark bouquet that blends crushed ashen stone and graphite with black currants and freshly ground espresso beans. Its textures are like crushed velvet, impossibly soft and supple, ushering in masses of peppery red and black fruits. A gentle bitter twang resides toward the close. For all the power within, the 2019 finishes remarkably fresh and lifted, leaving a faint stain of grippy tannins that perfectly frame the experience. (Eric Guido)

  5. Patrimony Caves des Lions

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#58638

    VN9898 pts. - Vinous - May 2023
Wildly spicy and intense yet lifted, the 2019 Patrimony Caves Des Lions wafts up with an array of pepper-tinged wildflowers, spiced exotic tea, dusty dried herbs and red currant. A pretty inner sweetness up front accentuates its silken textures, further elevated by citrus and mineral nuances. Ripe red and black fruits resonate throughout. This finishes incredibly fresh yet structured, lingering impossibly long. Through it all, a tinge of residual acids maintains remarkable freshness. (Eric Guido)
    RP97+97–99 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Mar 2022
The 2019 Caves des Lions is a barrel sample of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon and 47% Cabernet Franc, made from free-run juice and set to age about 22 months in 100% new French oak. Opaque ruby in color, it offers explosive cassis and purple flowers on the nose, with streaks of stony and green pepper character. The palate offers loads of perfume and exotic spice, with a chocolaty texture, seamless acidity and incredible length. (Erin Brooks)
    JD96+96–98 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 9/30/2021
More cassis, crushed stone, graphite, and chocolate emerge from the 2019 Caves Des Lions, and it’s beautifully textured, with full-bodied richness, building yet ripe, polished tannins, a gorgeous mid-palate, and one heck of a great finish. For all its richness and depth, it stays lively, fresh, and weightless, and it’s a beautiful wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)
