"Wish they all could be California...wines!" Yes, it's a familiar refrain, one we've all sung to ourselves countless times. California wines are among the most famous and recognizable in the world, and for good reason: boasting a wide variety of climates and growing areas, California produces wines that rival any in the world for quality and price.
The best California wines arguably come from Napa Valley and Sonoma County in Northern California, but don't forget about the Central Coast, or even an up-and-coming region like Temecula in Southern California.
Cabernet Sauvignon is the staple red grape of California, matched by Chardonnay as the most popular white grape in the state. Whatever your preference, it's clear that every growing region in California excels in producing both red and white wines of unmatched excellence.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2022 Throws off some pretty gorgeous aromas of violet, anise and sweet bay leaf, with a core of ripe, streamlined boysenberry and blackberry pâte de fruit flavors following closely. The finish has a racy graphite edge, while the fruit and aromas just spill through. Approachable now, too. Drink now through 2034. 13,500 cases made. (James Molesworth)JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/10/2022 What was previously released as the Oakville Cabernet, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estates Tier comes all from To Kalon and was fermented in oak tanks and aged in 96% new French oak. The blend is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and the rest Malbec. Ripe black fruits, smoked herbs, graphite, and even a touch of minerality define the bouquet, and it’s full-bodied, concentrated, and beautifully textured on the palate. Drink it over the coming two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, October 5, 2022 Aromas of lead pencil, redcurrant, gravel, blackberry and sage. Full-bodied with silky tannins. Lovely depth and complexity here, with a wash of black fruit. Powerful, without being overdone. Delicious. Best after 2024.
WE8989 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2015 Foamy, fresh and rather soft, this mouthfilling wine smells subtly like raspberries and cherries. It tastes attractively fruity and has a smooth texture.SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2017 Bright apple and cherry aromas combine with crisp, easygoing flavors that finish with festive acidity. Drink now. 91,495 cases made.

SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2022 This has a tightly layered core of cassis, mulberry and damson plum, while notes of warm earth and a bright iron spine drive underneath. Features a floral flash in the background, as the fruit and iron notes coalesce seamlessly on the finish. Steady as a rock. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2023 through 2036. 550 cases made. (James Molesworth)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Aug 31, 2019 Sleek and luxurious, with expressive Asian pear, strawberry blossom and roasted hazelnut flavors that build richness on an opulent finish. Drink now through 2020. 80,000 cases made.WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2015 The fruit flavors are apparent, fresh and lively in this medium-bodied, beautifully balanced brut. Light pear and pineapple aromas are followed by richer pear and citrus flavors, and subtle hints of baking spices, almonds and a nice earthy touch emerge.WS9090 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2014 Roederer Estate’s Brut is reliably open and delicious, this year’s cuvée bursting with concentrated apple flavor. It’s clean and dry with a long, delicate finish enhanced by the barrel-aged reserve wines that winemaker Arnaud Weyrich blends in. Its bold flavors and vinous texture would be great with cracked crab.ST8787 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - May/Jun 2012 Light yellow. Pear, orange zest and smoky lees on the nose. Offers flavors of melon and fresh orchard fruits, with a honeyed nuance and a spicy overtone. Refreshingly dry and precise, with firm closing grip and lingering bitterness.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022 The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Martha’s Vineyard barely hints at eucalyptus on the nose, with much more emphasis given to black cherries and cassis. This is full-bodied and rich, nicely balancing richness and texture against linear shape and focus and picking up hints of blueberries and spice on the long, mouthwatering finish. With 112 barrels having been bottled, there’s a fair bit of this wine to go around, if one can afford it. (Joe Czerwinski)SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2021 This throws off an overt and alluring mint aroma, while sweet bay leaf, violet, damson plum, red tea and steeped griotte notes all glide through together, carried by remarkably fine-grained tannins. Ends with a gentle echo of mint on the finish, while a subtle minerality chimes through as well. A stylish and suave wine, with plenty of charm now, but also pristine balance for cellaring. Best from 2022 through 2038. 2,500 cases made. (James Molesworth)
