"Wish they all could be California...wines!" Yes, it's a familiar refrain, one we've all sung to ourselves countless times. California wines are among the most famous and recognizable in the world, and for good reason: boasting a wide variety of climates and growing areas, California produces wines that rival any in the world for quality and price.

The best California wines arguably come from Napa Valley and Sonoma County in Northern California, but don't forget about the Central Coast, or even an up-and-coming region like Temecula in Southern California.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the staple red grape of California, matched by Chardonnay as the most popular white grape in the state. Whatever your preference, it's clear that every growing region in California excels in producing both red and white wines of unmatched excellence.

A light-red hue in the glass, this blend of 42% Grenache, 31% Cinsault, 24% Syrah, 2% Petite Sirah and 1% Counoise starts with aromas of cherry, grenadine, mace, star anise and barrel toast. The palate shows that rugged chaparral spice that made this blend world-famous, alongside dark-raspberry, boysenberry, roasted fennel and anise flavors.

  4. L’Aventure Côte à Côte Estate

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#46626

    RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Sep 2017
Blended of 60% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah, the medium to deep garnet colored 2015 Cote a Cote has a wonderfully vibrant perfume of red roses, red cherries and cinnamon stick over nuances of mulberries, vanilla pod, garrigue, dried lavender and white pepper. Full-bodied, rich, concentrated and oh-so-decadent, it completely fills the palate with seductive kirsch and spicy layers, supported by firm yet velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length. Bravo!
    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2017
Deep brilliant ruby. An assertively perfumed bouquet evokes fresh black and blue fruits, Moroccan spices, vanilla and smoky minerals, while a suave floral pastille accent builds in the glass. Deeply concentrated yet surprisingly lively on the palate, offering sweet black raspberry, boysenberry, spicecake and mocha flavors that unfold slowly, picking up licorice and vanilla notes on the back half. Shows outstanding clarity and thrust on a supple, strikingly long finish shaped by smooth, building tannins.

  6. Sine Qua Non Distenta I Grenache

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#57055

    RP9999 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
The 2019 Grenache Distenta I is composed of 76% Grenache, 9.3% Syrah, 8% Mourvèdre, 4.3% Petite Sirah and 2.4% Viognier. It was fermented with 43.5% whole clusters (predominantly Grenache) and matured for 23 months in 26.5% new French oak. Deep ruby-purple in color, it explodes with scents of crushed blackberries and blueberries, tar, coffee beans, cracked pepper and thyme. The full-bodied palate has a frame of grainy tannins, seamless acidity and layer after layer of spicy and floral fruit. It has a latency that suggests it will continue to develop for many years in bottle. 1,536 cases and 600 magnums will be released in the spring of 2022. This 2019 is made almost entirely from estate fruit — just 15% comes from the Bien Nacido Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley. The rest of the fruit comes from estate vineyards The Third Twin (39%), Eleven Confessions (32%), Cumulus (11%) and Molly Aïda (3%).
    JD98+98–100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/26/2021
Not yet bottled, the 2019 Grenache Ditenta 1 (which is the new name for the classic Grenache of the estate and means “unlabeled” in Latin) sports a dense purple hue as well as a flamboyant, exotic, complex nose of black raspberries, flowery incense, pepper, and spice. It’s incredibly layered and elegant, yet still has classic Sine Qua Non opulence and texture. It’s a brilliant Grenache in the making. (Jeb Dunnuck)

  7. Andremily Grenache

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#59142

    JD9797 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/29/2022
Moving to the 2019s from bottle, the 2019 Grenache offers a slightly more floral and perfumed style, with kirsch liqueur, herbes de Provence, sandalwood, and licorice. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Grenache that has a seamless, layered texture, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. It’s a more ethereal, perfumed, ultra-fine effort that will drink well for 15 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
The 2019 Grenache is blended with 11% Mourvèdre, 6% Syrah and 4% Graciano and was made using 65% whole clusters. Fruit comes from the Slide Hill Vineyard in Edna Valley, and the Alta Mesa Vineyard, Larner Vineyard and Harrison-Clarke Vineyard in Santa Barbara County. It was matured for about 21 months in 50% new French barriques and 600-liter demi-muids and 50% used French barriques. Deep ruby in color, it opens with savory tones of tar and loamy earth that give way to potpourri, cinnamon stick, prosciutto and black cherries. The medium-bodied palate is bright and juicy with fragrant fruits, fine, grainy tannins and bright acidity, and it has a very long, latent, spicy finish hinting at further improvement in bottle. Bottled on August 21, 2021, and tasted May 25, 2022, it will be released to consumers in the summer of 2022. 395 cases and a few magnums are available; it will be packaged and sold as a three-bottle set ($330), while magnums will be offered as a box set with the 2019 Andremily EABA. 8. Bedrock Gibson Ranch Heritage

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#55342

    VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2019 Gibson Ranch Heritage Wine is sourced from the oldest vines on the ranch, which date back to the 1880s. Quite unusually for a field blend, the Gibson Ranch is based on Grenache rather than on the far more common Zinfandel or Mataro. The aromatics, lifted by 20% whole clusters, are captivating. Blood orange, apricot, ginger, inky dark fruit and mint lend compelling inner sweetness and pliancy throughout. There is feeling of wildness in the Gibson Ranch that is impossible to miss. The Gibson Ranch will take adventurous readers for quite a ride. It is one of the most alluring and exotic wines in this range from Bedrock. Don’t miss it!

  9. Bedrock Old Hill Ranch Heritage

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#51611

    VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2018 Old Hill Heritage Wine is one of the many drop-dead gorgeous wines in the Bedrock range this year. The field blend of 30 varieties confers unusual complexity and nuance. Lavender, mint and sweet red cherry fruit develop, but it is the balance of power and finesse that I find most compelling. There are just so many layers of the Old Hill. Readers lucky enough to find it are in for a real treat.

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#54679

    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2019 Old Hill Heritage Wine is fascinating, as it captures all the signatures of this site, but with the smaller scale that is typical of the vintage. Sweet, perfumed aromatics and silky tannins frame this exquisitely beautiful, vivid heritage wine. Old Hill is a classic Sonoma ranch planted with a Zinfandel-based field blend that in this case includes more than 30 varieties. (Antonio Galloni)
    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2021
Vibrant, jammy, yet refined, with deep and polished notes of black raspberry, orange peel, espresso and smoked pepper. Builds richness and structure toward medium-grained tannins. Zinfandel, Grenache, Mataro, Syrah, Petit Sirah, Alicante and other varieties. Drink now through 2030. 200 cases made.
    JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/22/2021
Another cuvée from ancient vines (late 1800s), the 2019 Old Hill Ranch Heritage gives up a complex, medium to full-bodied, richly textured style as well as red plum fruits, notes of peppery herbs and dried flowers, ripe yet firm tannins, terrific overall balance, and a great finish. I love the purity of fruit, and it’s going to offer loads of pleasure over the coming 8–10 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2020 Old Hill Heritage Wine shows why this site is considered one of the very best in all of Sonoma. The pedigree is evident. A wine of volume, textural depth and intensity, the 2020 is a showstopper. Black cherry, chocolate, licorice and dark spice lend tons of complexity to this statuesque Zinfandel-based field blend. All the elements come together so beautifully. It’s hard to fully capture the Old Hill with words, as it really transcends descriptors. But when you taste it, you know. You know you are tasting a wine from a very special place.

  12. Frequency GSM

    2021 / 750 ml. | Item#59144

    JD92+92–94 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/29/2022
The only barrel sample I was able to taste, the 2021 GSM Santa Barbara County showed beautifully, and if this wine is any indication, this estate didn’t miss a beat in 2021. Giving up pretty blue fruits, peppery herbs, and sappy flower nuances, it’s medium to full-bodied, has terrific tannins, and an elegant yet textured style that will drink nicely right out of the gate. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2023
Plush and savory, with sleek raspberry, orange-tinged mocha and smoked pepper flavors that build richness and structure toward refined tannins. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2030. 1,350 cases made. (Tim Fish)
    VN91+91–93 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2022
The 2021 GSM is a promising wine. Deep and beautifully layered in the glass, with terrific vibrancy, the GSM is marked by gorgeous purity in its red/purplish fruit and terrific balance. It is the only 2021 that had been racked at the time of my visit, but also a wine that portends well for the vintage if its representative of quality across the range. (Antonio Galloni)

    2013 / 750 ml. | Item#40986

    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 27th Aug 2015
A sensational expression of California Grenache, Matt’s 2013 Sticks and Stones gives up tons of sweet cherries, raspberries, crushed, flowers and spice characteristics in a medium to full-bodied, pure, elegant profile. Made from 70% Grenache, 12% Mourvedre, 10% Cinsault and 8% Syrah, it shines for its overall balance, purity of fruit and light, ethereal mouthfeel that keeps you coming back to the glass. It’s already drinking great so don’t be afraid to crack open a bottle. It should still be going strong in 2022.

Lovely and lively aromas of strawberry, rosewater, lavender and brisk melon show on the nose of this reliably enjoyable blend of 44% Grenache, 31% Syrah, 14% Mourvèdre, 6% Counoise and 5% Cinsault.
