Medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, with a vibrant core of fruit, beautifully refined tannins and lively acids, it’s exquisitely elegant and harmonious, concluding with a long, perfumed finish. Stylistically, this wine exhibits a much closer affinity with the great Domaine de Chevalier of yesteryear than much of what was produced here in the early 2000s. It’s a masterclass in what contemporary Bordeaux can deliver, and worth a special effort to seek out. A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot that saw just 35% new oak, it sports a dense purple hue as well as a killer, quintessential Graves bouquet of darker black fruits, scorched earth, truffle, cold fireplace, tobacco, and graphite. More medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has brilliant purity, ultra-fine tannins, flawless balance, and a great, great finish. It’s not a blockbuster but has this incredible sense of class, balance, and finesse while being rich and concentrated. It’s a gorgeous wine, and wine lovers will adore being able to compare this side by side with the 2015, 2016, and 2018 over the coming 3–4 decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2019 has a large proportion (69%) of Cabernet Sauvignon, higher than previous vintages. Bottled in May 2021, it retains that delineated, focused bouquet of blackberry scents and touches of pencil lead, hints of raspberry and cedar. Just classic Saint-Julien. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and a superb line of acidity. Much more cohesive with more substance than prior vintages. There is a touch of spiciness toward the lingering finish, which reveals tobacco and gravel-like notes. Talbot made a great wine in 2019 and it will age with style. 14.1% alcohol (Neal Martin)JD93+93+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 4/11/2022 The 2019 Château Talbot is straight-up impressive, sporting a dense purple hue as well as a powerful nose of cassis, scorched earth, smoked tobacco, and spicy wood. The oak is judiciously used, both here and on the palate, which is harmonious and silky-smooth in texture, disguising the depth and intensity of this Pauillac. Easily the finest Fonbadet I have tasted, it is a classy wine with big ambitions, and the best wine that I have encountered from this estate. Chapeau!JD91+91–93 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - May 1, 2019 I loved the 2018 Château Fonbadet, a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend (there’s 25% Merlot) that’s aging in 50% new French oak. Classic Pauillac notes of cassis, lead pencil, graphite, cold fireplace, and ample earthy minerality all flow to a medium to full-bodied, elegant wine that stays tight, focused, and structured on the palate. Try after 2025.JD9898 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/11/2021 The Grand Vin 2018 Château Haut-Bailly checks in as 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. It spent 18 months in 60% new French oak. This is a beautiful, classic expression of this terroir, and its dense purple hue is followed by gorgeous black cherry and cassis fruits interwoven with ample tobacco leaf, cedary herbs, earth, truffle, and floral nuances. While 2018 was a hot, dry year (at the end of the season anyway), this shows a mix of cooler-climate, vibrant aromatics paired with a rich, concentrated, fresh style on the palate. It has plenty of tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. A beautiful, elegant 2018, it’s going to need 5–7 years of bottle age and keep for 3–4 decades. Deep garnet-purple colored, it needs a little coaxing to unlock a powerhouse of black fruit preserves, offering notes of blackberry pie, crème de cassis and black cherry compote, giving way to nuances of Chinese five spice, camphor, chocolate box and licorice with a touch of crushed rocks. The medium to full-bodied palate is jam-packed with plush textured, rich black fruits, supported by a lively backbone and finishing long and spicy.
